Let’s Get Married
Bass Persuades.

Just over a year has passed since Miley’s last album, and she has already managed to change her stage name (dropping the Cyrus) and record another one. She announced it in early September, giving fans just two weeks to wait. I was curious what all the rush was about, so I rushed to hear her milestone tenth album, Bass Persuades, on release day.
Her previous album, Something Beautiful, really impressed me and eventually became one of my most-played records of last year. I loved Miley’s ambitious approach to both music and fashion, and her desire to create something new without slipping into tacky pop excess. I thought it worked remarkably well, but apparently the rest of the world disagreed. Even devoted fans didn’t seem particularly impressed, which might explain why Miley returned to the studio so quickly and made something shorter and simpler this time around.
For pop fans hungry for hits, she offered the title track, Bass Persuades. I immediately described it as a B-side from a 2008 Lady Gaga album. With its huge synths, bare-bones chorus and lyrics about the life-changing importance of dancing, it’s dance-pop by numbers. Even Miley sounds like she’s bored singing it. And yet, even with this little effort, the hook sticks and does exactly what it’s supposed to do.
Don’t expect many more dancefloor moments after that. For the remaining half hour, Miley once again mixes familiar ingredients like new wave and ’90s alternative, searching for the perfect ratio — something she’s been doing for years, at least since Plastic Hearts (2020). This time, the chemistry seems to be just right.
It’s definitely not her strongest album: apart from the lead single, there aren’t really any obvious attempts at a hit. But there aren’t any glaring misfires either, and every song has a character of its own.
Different Religion, for example, stands out with its industrial sound — at least in the verses — and I don’t think we’ve heard Miley do quite this before. Let’s Get Married creates a sinister church atmosphere with an electronic organ that steals all the attention while Miley sings yet another half-written chorus. Orbit is an atmospheric ballad with a great collection of electronic textures bubbling away in the background. Aftermath develops the same idea further, with trance elements that reminded me of Madonna’s Ray of Light. After that, though, the album temporarily loses some of its alternative spark.
Redlights sounds like a watered-down Flowers: no strong melody, memorable chorus or standout vocal, but at least it has strings. Neon Signs, her duet with Andrew Wyatt, sounds like it was supposed to end up on the new Miike Snow album we’re still waiting for. I like its almost cartoonish retro style, but the song feels out of place here. That makes Innocent Ways even more interesting when it arrives — essentially a more aggressive take on the lead single, with Miley unexpectedly singing about her sister’s bad behaviour. With shimmering synths in the background, Snow could easily have closed the album, but Miley instead decided to finish it with a remix of Bass Persuades.
Bringing the tracklist full circle is an interesting choice. Or perhaps just an attempt to make the album feel a little longer and more substantial. Unfortunately, the remix itself is pointless. It barely differs from the original and sounds unfinished — which, perhaps, is the defining aesthetic of the whole album.
Instead of overcooking another record, Miley decided to leave this one slightly underdone. Maybe that’s exactly why all these different genres hold together so well: the mixture hasn’t had time to set yet. But a consistent texture doesn’t necessarily guarantee a pleasant taste.
