Ellie Goulding – I Know Too Much

English version below

К сожалению, новый альбом I Know Too Much вряд ли исправит ситуацию

I Know Too Much

Ellie Goulding was one of the biggest pop stars of the last decade. Despite her fairly modest vocal abilities, she managed to conquer several different genres, from folktronica and club music to a couple of genuinely first-rate ballads. With the arrival of a new decade, however, her popularity faded surprisingly quickly. Unfortunately, her new album, I Know Too Much, is unlikely to turn things around.

This is already Goulding’s third rather mediocre album in a row, and while the previous two at least made some attempts at producing hits, this time she seems to have given up on commercial success altogether. There are no collaborations with DJs or rappers, or even particularly striking solo tracks. And she desperately needs songs like that — something capable of briefly overshadowing her old hits and drawing listeners’ attention to her new material.

As a songwriter, Goulding does make an effort, delivering personal and sometimes touching, sometimes witty lyrics about breakups and troubled relationships. But her label’s apparent lack of interest in the project prevents even these stronger moments from reaching their full potential. The album arrived quietly, with barely any promotion, no memorable imagery and no distinctive new aesthetic to define this era. Thankfully, Goulding is reportedly leaving her label after this release — perhaps that explains why the album feels somewhat unfinished, as if its main purpose was simply to fulfil a contract.

Instead of the synth-heavy arrangements and electronic production that once defined much of her music, Goulding now spends more time with live instrumentation, particularly guitars and strings. The problem is that the arrangements rarely feel ambitious enough to leave much of an impression. If this kind of light, feminine pop appeals to you, the elegant For Your Entertainment, 4 Seasons and Black Prada Dress should be enjoyable enough. Synths briefly return to the foreground on the more energetic Nobody Dances, another attempt to channel the sound of the ’80s.

But if, like me, you are waiting for something more convincing, this probably isn’t the album for you. Loser is worth mentioning for its retro touches and amusing lyrics (“You changed your cologne, but you still smell like a loser”), while closing track Ravers sounds like the producers were trying to recreate something in the vein of Fred again.. Yet even these songs stand out largely because everything surrounding them feels so pale

I Know Too Much isn’t bad enough to be irritating — it simply does far too little to remind us why Ellie Goulding was once one of the defining pop stars of her generation. 3.5/5.
