Ian Van Dahl.
On a toujours le choix

Mylène Farmer has released her thirteenth studio album, Égrégore, featuring her signature style, flowing melodies, and plenty of ballads. The only question is whether that’s a good thing or not.
I’ve always considered Mylène one of the world’s great pop divas, and her relatively limited recognition in the English-speaking world has only made her success and extraordinary artistry all the more impressive to me. Her early dance hits were distinctly different from her ’90s output, while in the 2000s she embraced electropop experimentation with remarkable ease. On this album, however, there’s little attempt to reinvent Mylène, despite her extensive collaborations with DJ Lewis and DJ Snake.
Among the more uptempo tracks, there’s the single Des lols et des quoi, with a melody that gets stuck in your head instantly. Unfortunately, it’s also so simple and repetitive that the song eventually starts to feel rather basic. Combien pour la nuit works much better, thanks to its dynamic production, while Mylène continues to half-whisper her lyrics in her trademark style. It’s an unexpected direction for DJ Snake though, whose work I’d never have associated with the early-2000s Eurodance sound of artists like DJ Sammy, Fragma, or Ian Van Dahl.
Apart from these two tracks, the producers have turned almost everything else into electronic ballads. Once again, it’s surprising to hear something like Sans amarres from DJ Snake. Its dramatic chorus, straight out of the most intense moment of a TV drama, feels worlds away from his explosive club hits. Still, he manages to create a sense of unease through ticking synths.
Of DJ Lewis’s contributions, the title track Égrégore is easily the strongest. It comes closest to being a well-balanced pop hit, combining a distinct rhythm, subtle production details, and Mylène’s fantastic vocals with an elegant melody.
My main issue with the other songs is that each seems to rely too heavily on just one element. On a toujours le choix leans more on its production, Reste la lumière has a beautiful melody, and Confession is interesting as a tribute to the late David Lynch. But none of these tracks takes any real risks or sees Mylène fully immerse herself in a new aesthetic. There’s nothing wrong with ballads, but we’ve heard her do all this before. After 40 years in the business and such an extensive discography, adding something fresh to the familiar feels essential if a new album is going to stand out.
Nevertheless, Mylène manages to close the album on an impressive note with Plus d’écho, which makes up for some of the shortcomings of the preceding tracks. This atmospheric trip-hop piece, Moby’s sole contribution to the album, somehow sounds both nostalgic and futuristic at once. Some have suggested that the song might be Mylène’s farewell to her fans. But knowing how artists are, it could just as easily be a promise to meet again.
Égrégore is hardly Mylène’s boldest work, nor does it sound particularly fresh against today’s musical landscape. Still, it’s a worthy album from a mature artist.
