Fontaines D.C. – Dopamine Chamber

English version below

Fontaines D.C. started out as a fairly ordinary punk band from Dublin, but by their fifth album, they’ve grown into one of the most prominent bands of their generation, now filling stadiums. Success like that must come with a certain creative excitement, which is how I explain their consistent output. They haven’t taken any lengthy breaks so far, steadily releasing a new album every couple of years. And now comes their fifth, Dopamine Chamber.

After the rather pop-oriented Romance, with its 90s-inspired sound, they could have pushed even further in that direction or, alternatively, delivered a collection of songs packed with loud guitars and anthemic choruses. But the band chose neither path, instead returning to the dark atmosphere of Dublin’s underground scene. What might once have been the only option available to a group of inexperienced musicians now gives them the freedom and confidence to approach something close to genius.

The result is an album with hardly any straightforward, instantly memorable melodies. The vocal delivery often resembles rap, with rhythm and sonic density taking priority over conventional hooks. On the very first track, the singer sticks to just a couple of notes, throwing out clipped phrases while all the real changes happen in the instrumentation: synths wheeze, bubble and simmer before spilling over into something that sounds like a sinister Depeche Mode track from the 80s. Mimesis takes another step towards this noirish synth-pop and remains one of the album’s most dynamic, almost danceable songs, despite its dark atmosphere and lyrics about emotional alienation.

More guitars appear on Happy For You, but these aren’t the melodic riffs that would set stadiums alight. Instead, we get a wall of noisy distortion that contrasts with the song’s quiet opening and somewhat contradicts its title. But I suppose everyone expresses happiness differently. Even the album’s biggest hit, Marianne, has a simple chorus where the singer practically spells out every syllable, like some kind of rock nursery rhyme. Everything about this album goes against the conventional rules of the pop industry, and somehow, it all works brilliantly.

Even the band’s first-ever duet, with Rosalía, one of the biggest pop stars in the world with billions of streams to her name, unexpectedly turns out to be a gentle orchestral ballad. And with its Bond-esque lyrics, it’s hardly a particularly bright moment on the album either.

The only song that failed to surprise me was Tongue. It has so many different sections and sounds, including a brief piano passage, that you gradually get used to all the unpredictability and simply stop being surprised. By this point, you can just put your trust in the musicians and let them lead you into whatever dark corner of their creative imagination they choose.

Perhaps the band saved their one truly melodic, pop-oriented moment for the very end: Japan, with its proper chorus, simple rhymes, gentle vocal delivery and an instrumental arrangement that sounds like a leftover from the previous album. After all the noisy and unpredictable twists and turns, a moment like this feels essential, making the apocalyptic Intimate that follows sound even more unsettling.

Dopamine Chamber is a pop album turned inside out, made by a band that has only recently achieved major commercial success. There’s nothing more punk than rejecting the industry’s standard formulas, but rejection doesn’t mean the result has to be alienating. It can still draw listeners in and give them a proper shake-up.

And for that shake-up, I’m giving it 5/5.
