Bullion – Nearly

The Arm of Cinderella

I was recently listening to Carly Rae Jepsen’s album when I spotted a familiar name in the songwriting credits. It was Nathan Jenkins, who releases his own music under the name Bullion. As it happens, he’s just released a new album of his own, Nearly.

It’s one of the best indie releases I’ve heard in a long time. Maybe it’s just my personality rather than the music itself, but I love short, cohesive albums where nothing feels out of place or demands too much attention. That doesn’t mean Nearly is monotonous, though. Jenkins explores different musical directions, but never sounds like he’s forcing anything. It all feels wonderfully intuitive.

The opening track, Very Few Inspirations, and the following Roo immediately reminded me of Bon Iver, with their fragmented vocal delivery, sparse arrangements and dreamy synths. Perfectly cosy tracks for autumn. The Arm of Cinderella (featuring L Devine) brings to mind the understated funk of Rex Orange County, while Applegene sounds like cartoonish shoegaze — the kind of soundtrack I could easily imagine in a Halloween special of an animated series.

But there’s more to this album than a handful of musical comparisons. Jenkins proves he knows how to write a great pop chorus on Francis Ford and Young Shiver. Yet he doesn’t always rely on that talent. His distinctive personality and fondness for unusual rhythms are perhaps best showcased on the instrumental OK Parsley.

If Nathan wanted to, he could easily have turned this record into a bright, hook-filled pop album with a few potential hits. Instead, he chose a different direction, closer to sophisti-pop, one that allows his strengths to shine through. He can leave the straightforward pop bangers to artists like Carly.

4.5/5
