Chuck Timely & The Hourglass.

Song is All You Get

Tucker Pillsbury, better known as Role Model, started making music almost a decade ago. Back then, he was recording lo-fi and bedroom pop with little obvious ambition for mainstream success. Over time, though, his sound changed significantly: the production grew fuller, live instrumentation became more prominent, and country and rock influences started creeping in. The shy bedroom-pop kid eventually made it onto festival stages.
His third studio album, Chuck Timely & The Hourglass, feels like the culmination of that evolution.
For the record, Pillsbury created a new character named Chuck, even though the album was not originally conceived as a full-on concept record. Still, the songs are sequenced so neatly that they end up telling a surprisingly coherent story about a charming loser — from one-night romantic adventures in Los Angeles all the way to marriage.
The album opens with an a cappella mantra in which Chuck keeps repeating how badly he wants something real and genuine in his life. After a string of failed relationships, all he has left are songs about his romantic misadventures. That is not nothing, but clearly it is not enough either. The whole moment feels almost like something he would say in therapy, which makes it hard not to hear at least a little autobiography in it.
By Love I You, Chuck is already at a bar trying to charm a woman. She is played by Dakota Johnson, who is also Pillsbury’s real-life partner. By the chorus, Chuck is drunk, and by the end of the song she seems to be shouting either “Chuck! Chuck!” or “chug! chug!” — either way, not exactly discouraging the drinking. After some doubts and relationship drama, though, the story eventually leads him to Wedding and finally Harmony.
Beyond the connected, partly autobiographical storyline, what impressed me most was the album’s sense of pacing. A lot of records front-load all their biggest songs and then spend the second half wandering between genres in search of variety. Pillsbury does almost the opposite.
Ballads are constantly balanced against more energetic guitar-driven tracks, while the two biggest singles, High Hopes 3000 and Joy, are placed on opposite sides of the record. There are plenty of potential highlights in between: Song Is All You Get rides on a warm, sunny groove, while later tracks like Service Receipt and the deceptively laid-back Stain keep the second half from losing momentum. Love I You has a touch of old-school Elvis-era pop, while Honeydew brings in some acoustic melancholy that recalls Ed Sheeran. The album closes with one of its strongest moments, Harmony, built around an especially satisfying rhythmic idea.
In the end, Chuck Timely & The Hourglass communicates its central idea very clearly: this is a story about a womanizer who tried to drown his loneliness in parties and casual romance, only to stumble into a happy ending.
On paper, it is a country album, but a lot of these songs barely sound like country at all, and the lyrics still work perfectly well outside the album’s broader narrative. The concept is there, but it never becomes a checklist of genre clichés.
What really sells the record are the melodies, the rich live arrangements and Pillsbury’s convincing vocal delivery. He is not showing off with huge notes or vocal acrobatics, but there is plenty of personality in the performance. Either Tucker Pillsbury is a genuinely good actor — which should come in handy for his upcoming film debut — or he is simply very good at writing warm, likeable music.
