Даже главный сингл hate that i made you love me совсем не похож на музыку с радио – очень неторопливый, без яркого припева и напоминающий синти-поп от инди-артистов.

Ariana Grande is one of the most successful millennial pop stars. Like many American performers, she started out as a child actress before becoming a pop superstar. She also has probably the most spotless reputation among artists of her generation. None of her albums have been considered flops, she has continued acting throughout her music career, and apart from endless tabloid stories about her appearance or personal life, there has rarely been much to criticize.
That’s why her «bad girl» or dangerous woman image never felt completely natural to me. Ariana herself always came across as sweet and likeable, yet her team often tried to present her as a tougher, more provocative character. Black songwriters and producers gave her bold songs packed with trendy beats, huge choruses, and plenty of opportunities to show off the kind of vocals that invited comparisons to Mariah Carey.
In recent years, though, Ariana has moved away from the tan, the vocal acrobatics, and that whole image in favour of something much softer and more girly. Petal is the perfect example of this new direction, and it’s worth mentioning that she now writes all of her own songs. The downside is that, unless you pay close attention to the lyrics, many of the tracks can blur together because there are no obvious hits. Even the lead single, hate that i made you love me, sounds nothing like modern radio pop—it’s slow and closer to indie synth-pop than a chart anthem. I’ve always appreciated it when mainstream artists step away from commercial formulas, and Petal is exactly the kind of successful experiment I like to see.
There are still glimpses of Ariana’s more commercial past. The title track has a more aggressive instrumental and a melody that occasionally recalls 7 rings, while big feelings could have easily come from the Dangerous Woman era. Otherwise, this is a gentle album for introverts and hopeless romantics, with slightly dirty beats on kiss me, drum-and-bass melancholy on oh well, and the sugary sweetness of bad thing (bunny hop).
Overall, Ariana continues down the path she started on Eternal Sunshine. To me, this is the least straightforward album in her discography, and that’s exactly what makes it one of her most interesting releases. It’s an unexpectedly understated record from a star of her scale. 4/5
