Ариана вернулась после самого долгого в своей карьере перерыва. Карьера у неё пока не особо длинная: прошлой осенью дебютник отметил десятилетие, но за это время она успела выпустить аж шесть альбомов. С таким графиком эксперименты со звучанием ожидать не приходилось, и на последних пластинках она как-то забуксовала, завязла в трэпе.
После такого перерыва в 3.5 года можно было ожидать заметных перемен, но они не произошли. Вместо трэпа Ариана попыталась влиться в модные веяния современного дэнс-попа и имитировать эстетику девяностых, но вышло не очень убедительно.
Новый альбом слушается так же легко, как её прошлые пластинки, но на нём абсолютно так же ничего не выделяется и не запоминается. Можно гонять пластинку по кругу и так и не заметить разницы в песнях. Наверно, для больших артистов это единственная верная тактика во времена стриминга, когда их заработки уменьшились, а кормить надо большие корпорации.
Подача певицы стала ещё более ленивой, хотя её вокальные данные явно позволяют делать намного больше. Ощущение, что она засыпала и начала бормотать тексты песен во сне, и их очень аккуратно записали на диктофон.
Инструменталкам тоже не хватает глубины. Все они лёгкие и абсолютно бесхарактерные. Даже лид-сингл yes,and? никак не тянет на звание хита. Он связан с Vogue Мадонны, но даже сравнивать его с легендарным треком королевы поп-музыки не приходится.
Один из самых сильных треков – Bye, который намного больше напомнил мне альбомы Мадонны из ранних девяностых, в частности, Bye Bye Baby сЭротики, но с лёгкими вайбами олдскульного фанка.Это первый полноценный трек на альбоме и его ценность в том, что он задаёт тему пластинки: она будет об отношениях Арианы с мужчиной, с которым она уже однажды рассталась, попыталась его ненавидеть, поняла, что не за что, и вернулась к нему, несмотря на плохое отношение к нему публики.
Пожалуй, самой яркой песней оказалась We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love), у которой тоже есть свои проблемы. Музыка здесь всё ещё тихая, будто играет фоном в примерочной кабинке или лифте, но всё такой же сонливый вокал Арианы сделали погромче. Динамики альбому это не добавило, и звучит, как ошибка инженеров.
Интересной получилась аранжировка только на немного психоделичной Imperfect for You, которую критики даже сравнили с работами Битлов. До Битлов песня, конечно, не дотягивает очень сильно, но ещё одна сильная сторона этого трека это текст и игра слов в припеве.

Eternal Sunshine не оказался таким резким поворотом в карьере Арианы, какой можно было ожидать. Она всё ещё перерабатывает старые идеи, которые мы уже много раз слышали на её релизах, начиная с Dangerous Woman. Пластинка получилась одномерной, пустой и поверхностной, ни в кое случае не отталкивающей, но и без притягательных экспериментов,. Будто все полчаса слушателю дают рассасывать таблетку сахарозаменителя – лёгкая сладость на языке быстро растворяется, и после неё не остаётся никаких впечатлений. Ставлю 2/5.

Ariana has made her return following the longest hiatus of her relatively brief career. Despite her career only spanning a decade since her debut last fall, she has managed to release an impressive six albums during this period. With such a demanding schedule, significant experimentation with sound was not anticipated, and her recent albums have seen her somewhat stuck in a trap music rut.
After a 3.5-year break, one might have expected noticeable changes, yet they did not materialize. Instead of trap, Ariana attempted to align with the modern trends of dance-pop and emulate the aesthetics of the 1990s, but the result was not particularly convincing.
Her latest album is as easy to listen to as her previous works, yet it similarly fails to stand out or leave a lasting impression. It’s possible to play the album on loop without noticing any distinct differences between the songs. This might be a viable strategy for major artists in the streaming era, where their earnings have diminished, yet they still need to support large corporations.
Ariana’s delivery has become even more lackadaisical, although her vocal talents clearly have the potential for much more. It feels as if she has dozed off and is mumbling the lyrics in her sleep, which have been carefully recorded.
The instrumentals also lack depth. They are light and utterly nondescript. Even the lead single «yes, and?» does not stand up to the status of a hit. It’s associated with Madonna’s «Vogue,» but comparing it to the legendary track of the queen of pop music is out of the question.
One of the strongest tracks, «Bye,» reminds me more of Madonna’s early 1990s albums, specifically «Bye Bye Baby» from «Erotica,» but with a hint of old-school funk. This track is the first full piece on the album, and its value lies in setting the theme: Ariana’s relationship with a man she has previously broken up with, attempted to hate, realized there was no reason for, and returned to despite public disapproval.
The most striking song turned out to be «We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),» which also has its issues. The music remains quiet, as if playing in the background in a fitting room or an elevator, but Ariana’s sleepy vocals have been turned up a notch. This does not add any dynamics to the album and sounds like an engineering mistake.
«Imperfect for You» stands out with a slightly psychedelic arrangement, which critics have even compared to The Beatles’ work. Of course, the song does not come close to The Beatles, but another strong aspect of this track is the lyrical content and wordplay in the chorus.
«Eternal Sunshine» did not mark the significant shift in Ariana’s career that might have been expected. She continues to rework old ideas that we’ve heard many times in her releases since «Dangerous Woman.» The album feels one-dimensional, empty, and superficial—not repulsive, but lacking in compelling experiments. It’s like the listener is dissolving a sugar substitute tablet for half an hour—the light sweetness on the tongue quickly dissolves, leaving no lasting impression. I rate it 2 out of 5.
